BMW’s Electric Vehicle Sales Surge, Outpacing Audi and Mercedes Combined

In a stunning achievement for 2024, BMW has outshone its German rivals, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, by selling more electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide than the two competitors combined. The Munich-based automaker delivered an impressive 368,475 electric vehicles (excluding its Mini and Rolls-Royce brands), solidifying its dominance in the EV market.

For comparison, Mercedes-Benz sold 185,059 EVs, while Audi delivered approximately 164,000 fully electric models, totaling 349,060 units together—falling short of BMW’s remarkable figure. This milestone underscores the success of BMW’s strategy to develop electric counterparts to its traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) lineup.

Sales Growth and Competitor Declines

BMW’s global EV sales soared by 13.5% in 2024, a sharp contrast to the declines experienced by its competitors. Mercedes-Benz saw its EV sales drop by 23.1%, and Audi’s figures fell by 8%, highlighting BMW’s growing edge in the electric mobility race.

Mini and Rolls-Royce Shine in EV Segment

The broader BMW Group, which includes Mini and Rolls-Royce, also celebrated strong EV performance:

  • Mini sold 56,171 battery-electric vehicles, marking a 24.3% increase from 2023.
  • Rolls-Royce set a new record with 1,890 Spectre EVs delivered, a massive leap from the 326 units sold in 2023.

Overall Performance and Future Goals

Across all its brands, BMW Group sold nearly 2.5 million vehicles in 2024, a 4% decrease from the previous year. However, the share of EVs in its total sales climbed from 14.7% to 17.4%, reflecting a clear shift toward electrification. Still, the company has its sights set higher, aiming for EVs to account for 50% of its sales by the end of the decade.

BMW’s Electrified Future

Looking ahead, BMW is gearing up to launch at least six new EVs by 2028 under its next-generation Neue Klasse lineup. These models promise a range exceeding 480 kilometers on a single charge, ultra-fast charging with 800-volt battery packs, and significant efficiency improvements over the current EV offerings.

BMW’s electrifying success in 2024 not only cements its leadership among German automakers but also sets the stage for an ambitious push into the future of sustainable mobility.
