Toyota has made waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its most affordable electric SUV, the bZ3X, in China. Priced at just 109,800 yuan ($15,000), the crossover racked up over 10,000 pre-orders within its first hour of availability, according to Carscoops. This impressive debut highlights the growing demand for budget-friendly EVs and Toyota’s strategic push into the competitive electric crossover segment.
The bZ3X is produced through GAC Toyota, a joint venture between Toyota and Chinese automaker GAC. First unveiled as the bZ FlexSpace Concept in April 2023, the vehicle evolved into a pre-production model showcased at the Beijing Auto Show a year later. Now in full production, it’s positioned as an attractive option for cost-conscious buyers seeking electric mobility without breaking the bank.
Specs and Features
Slightly larger than the BYD Atto 3, the bZ3X measures 4,600 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, and 1,645 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,765 mm-putting it in the same size class as Toyota’s popular RAV4. Weighing in at 1,835 kg, it’s a typical contender in the compact EV crossover category.
The bZ3X comes in three battery configurations. The base model features a 50.03 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, delivering a range of 430 km (267 miles) based on the CTLC cycle. Mid-tier and top-tier models offer more power and range, with the flagship boasting a 67.92 kWh battery for up to 610 km (379 miles) on a single charge. Power output varies too: entry-level and mid-range trims produce 204 horsepower, while the top trim ups that to 224 horsepower.
Even at its low starting price, the bZ3X doesn’t skimp on features. The base model includes a 14.6-inch multimedia touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, and an 11-speaker Yamaha audio system. Higher trims, priced at $20,700 and $22,000, add an advanced driver-assistance system powered by Nvidia technology, appealing to buyers seeking cutting-edge safety and convenience.
